Minutes Oct 4 1997

The meeting was opened by President Earl Mann VE3PTF at about 10:25 AM on Oct 4 at The Plainsman Restaurant on Hwy # 5 in Dundas. ( the area was shrouded in a dense fog causing the delay). A total of 80 members and guests attended. After outlining the day's agenda a moment of silence was held for the silent keys as listed below.

Silent keys who passed away since the Spring meeting, Jim Sweet VE3AAI, Less Gartshore VE30L, Wm. Staples VE3FVL and Barney Scarlett VE3NOA. Some one announced that Fred Western VE3FYW passed away last month.

President Earl spoke briefly in tribute to Jim Sweet VE3AAI.

Members were asked to introduce their guests.

Richards VE3FYR, Wally Burnie VE3APU, Don Hameff VE3AYA, Norm Freiden

VE3CZI, Bill McNanny VE3MIQ and Dana Shtun VE3DSS.

New Business
Pres. Earl proposed to establish a nominating committee to select a new executive for the annual meeting in May.

Moved by Ted Bodman, seconded by Tom Atkins VE3CDM that the present executive carry on for another 2 year term subject to their approval. The current executive agreed to one more 2 year term only. Motion carried.

QCWA Convention 2000
Croft Taylor spoke requesting that Chapter 73 submit a proposal to host the International Convention in Toronto in the year 2000. He outlined requirements and the assistance available from headquarters. He also indicated that he and George Roach, the Chairman of the '96 Convention in Ottawa would attend organizational meetings with the group in Toronto. He answered several concerns from members and indicated that Headquarters will provide a loan of $1,500.00 as seed money to get started. Any profits stay with the host Chapter.

Sixteen members indicated support for the idea of hosting the convention. None were opposed.

Pres. Earl proposed that a Committee be formed to do a Feasibility Study on hosting the convention in the year 2001. Six members volunteered to serve. ( VE3DHL, VE3CDM, VE3CZI, VE3MLL,VE3DSS, and VE3WCB. Earl will convene a meeting in Toronto in the next several weeks to discuss the matter.

Croft Taylor VE3CT of Kanata, the Canadian Director gave his report. He is on his way to the International Convention and Board of Director's meeting in Kansas City next week end then off to Sarasota FLA., for the winter. Because there has not been a board meeting since our last meeting in May he had no new items from the Board.

Croft discussed the following:

  • The late arrival of the Fall '97 Journal.
  • Changes to time and duration of the QSO party that will be finalized and announced in the Journal.
  • An application for a Scholarship from the Ottawa area was denied, but this should not deter applicants, since more funds are available and are awarded on a geographic basis.

RAC Report
By Dana Shtun discussed the following

  • Frequency allocations and the upcoming WARC -97 meetings. A member of RAC will be appointed to the Canadian WARC team.
  • Urged RAC members to make newly licensed amateurs aware of RAC and invite them to join RAC.
  • Donations made to RAC will now qualify as a Charitable Donation for tax purposes.

Fergus Kyle spoke in support of re-electing Dana as a Director of RAC for Ontario South in the upcoming election. He also announced the dedication ceremony and banquet for the opening of the Noel Eaton Memorial station in Burlington on Feb 25/98.Tickets will be $ 25.00 each.

IARU REPORT
Tom Atkins VE3CDM of Toronto, President of LKRU Region 2 gave a brief report on IARU matters. He outlined his past and upcoming travels on behalf of IARU.

Harold Braun VE3DWH introduced our guest speaker, Paul Cassel VE3SY, who gave a Video presentation of the web site for the Hammond Radio Museum, which is available on the Internet. To date the site has had about 4,000 hits from around the world in the past few months. He was thanked by Pres. Earl and he announced a one hour lunch break.

The prizes were supplied by the following:

  • ElectroSonic
  • Freedman Books (VE3BGE)
  • Hammond Mfg. & VE3HC

Croft Taylor VE3CT presented Gold Anniversary Certificates (as per the attached list) to those in attendance celebrating 50 or 60 years since obtaining their license. A 70 year certificate was announced for Fred Western VE3FYW who passed away recently.

Certificates will be mailed to those unable to attend and to the family of Fred Western.

The next meeting will held on May 2/98 at the "Plainsman Restaurant" beginning at 9:00 AM.

Harold Braun thanked Keith Campbell VE31ZW, who arranged for the video projector and Paul Cassel for supplying stick on name badges.

The meeting concluded with the usual array of door prizes for the radio amateurs.

VE3DWH read a letter from HQ. acknowledging our donation of $1000.00 US to the Memorial Fund

VE3DWH moved adoption of this report. Seconded by Al Bonner VE3FY.

VE3DWH explained the high expenses for the period.

VE3DWH thanked Brian VE3BWG & Jim VE3FMT for helping at the door and Fred

VE3HC for all his help in printing forms, providing envelopes and obtaining prizes.
