Report of May 6/00 Meeting

Sec/Treas. Chapter 73

President Earl Mann VE3EHM opened the meeting about 10:05 AM on May 6/2000 at The Plainsman Restaurant on Hwy # 5 in Dundas with a total of 80 members and guests present. 

Pres. Earl welcomed every one and introduced special guests Mr. Ken Hammond Sr. (Brother of the late Fred Hammond VE3HC) & his wife Fran, Noreen Irwin, Curator of the Hammond Museum of Radio & John Hann VE3LKH

A moment of silence was held for the silent keys, who passed away since our October '99 meeting :

Harold Braun VE3DWH Sec/Treas. gave the financial report indicating total assets are 5173.85 as of Feb29, 2000. He explained that postage costs were higher because of the "Name Change" ballot mailed to all members in December '99.

The Sec/Treasurer reported that the proposal to change the name of the Chapter to the "FRED HAMMOND Chapter 73" received following the death of Fred Hammond last November had been voted on by the members via a mailed ballot and was approved unanimously. 129 ballots were mailed, 103 were returned, all in favour of the change. A motion made by Paul Cassel VE3SY to ratify the name change was approved. Final ratification by the Board of Directors is expected at their meeting in Toronto on October 12th at the convention.

Pres Earl announced that because the Chapter is hosting the International Convention in October, there would not be a regular meeting at The Plainsman in the fall.

The current executive's second two-year term was to end to day.
There was no report from a committee as such, but the executive has formulated a plan where-by Earl Mann VE3EHM will continue as President at least thru the current calendar year. Harold Braun VE3DWH will continue as Sec/Treasurer until Dec 31,2000. Keith Bentley VE3DHL will become Sec/Treasurer effective Jan 1,2001. This proposal was ratified on a motion by Jim Thompson VE3BCA. 

HAMMOND MUSEUM UPDATE
Harold VE3DWH reported that assisting with the operation of the Museum has become a project of the Chapter and that a number of members have volunteered to act as guides at the Museum on Saturday afternoons starting next Saturday. The Museum will be open Saturday afternoons from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm during the coming months. The VE3HC Memorial Station will be on the air as much as possible during these periods. The station is capable if operating all bands, 40 thru 10 Metres at present a 75 Metre dipole will erected as soon as possible. 

Mr. Ken Hammond Sr. (Fred's brother) spoke, conveying the thanks & appreciation of the Hammond family in recognizing Fred by changing the Chapter name.

Harold Braun read several tributes to Fred from the web page, which was received from all over the world at the time of his passing. There are over 27 pages of tributes, still accessible on the web page. Several members spoke of there own anecdotes of assistance Fred had provided over the years.

Noreen Irwin (Curator of the Museum), read a letter from Fred's sons Robert & William expressing their thanks & appreciation for the name change and the assistance from the Chapter members in the operation of the Museum. Noreen added her own comments of thanks & indicated 450 - 500 visitors have already been thru the Museum since it opened last October.

IARU
Tom Atkins VE3CDM reported on the recently held Telecomm 2000 in Brazil, which IARU attended. There were about 28,000 in attendance from some 25 countries. This was only the second time IARU had attended Telecom.

April 18th marked the 75th Anniversary of IARU 

WRC-2000 will begin in May in Turkey & is expected to last a month.
IARU remains committed to having 7.000-7.300 available to amateurs worldwide.

QCWA
Croft Taylor VE3CT Vice-President reported:

  • Association in good financial shape
  • A new endowment fund, started by an anonymous member will provide funds to the general operating funds to minimize any future increase in membership fees. Donations to the fund will be matched $1.00 for $1.00 from the donor's fund.
  • He urged members to consider qualifying & applying for the various Certificates available such as the QSO Party, Worked 100 members or Worked 60 Chapters.
  • Members will receive ballots to elect the Board of Directors for the next term shortly. Croft asked for support during the election.

Headquarters is now set up to use Visa/MasterCard for Membership Services, such as Membership fees & supplies.

President Earl asked members to read the information regarding the Endowment Fund in the last issue of the Journal & come prepared to vote on a proposal regarding the Fund at the next regular meeting. 

George Roach VE3BNO, Canadian Director urged members to support the Convention Committee by sending in their reservation form in now to attend the convention in October. He also indicated he will be a candidate for re-election in the up coming election and asked for members support.

He described the need to support the RAC "Defence of Amateur Radio Fund, (DARF) to assist RAC in sending a delegate to WRC 2000 being held in May in Istanbul.

RAC
In the absence of Dana Shtun VE3DSS, Pres. Earl spoke briefly about RAC.

He recommended support of the DARF & indicated comments regarding the possibility of lowering of CW qualifications in Canada be sent to Dana.

2000 Convention
President Earl reported in considerable detail of the status of plans for the Convention being hosted by the Chapter at the Delta Airport Hotel Oct 12-15th. The Board of Director's will meet at the hotel on Thursday Oct 12th and convention will begin with forums on Friday Oct 13th and Saturday Oct 14th. The banquet will be held Saturday evening. The convention will conclude with a bus trip to the Hammond Museum on Sunday morning with a stop for lunch at the Plainsman Restaurant and an afternoon stop at the Heritage Warplane Museum in Hamilton. 

The Master of Ceremonies at the banquet will be Ron Nickle VE3SF and guest speaker will be Larry Price W4RA, President of IARU. A dissertation regarding the late Fred Hammond's efforts, along with assistance from Martin Rosenthal VE3MR and Tom Wong VE7BC in re-establishing Amateur Radio in China is being planned.

Before adjourning for lunch a container was placed at the door for donations to the DARF for those who wished to make a contribution. A total of $125.00 was collected for DARF, which will be sent to RAC next week.

The next meeting will be held on May 5,2001 at the "Plainsman Restaurant" beginning at 10:00 AM.

The meeting concluded with a drawing of some 60/70 door prizes. Approximately 1/3 of the prizes were donated back to the Convention Committee to be used as prizes at the Convention.
